The Abruzzo region holds the most number of National Parks compared to other Southern Italy cities. It is common for outdoor enthusiasts to rush towards these parks to experience the wildlife and nature here. Although hiking is popular, visitors do go rock climbing and horseback riding during the summer. It is also common for local Italian city dwellers to visit them to escape the rush of the city. Some notable parks to hike would be the Abruzzo National Park, Majella National Park, and the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park.
If you are looking for a more exciting experience, you may also want to hike up one of Southern Italy’s volcanoes! Although most remain dormant, hiking up one of them is always a thrill-seeking moment. Mount Vesuvius is considered the most popular volcano in Southern Italy. Well-known as the cause of the ancient city, Pompeii’s destruction, the area around this volcano has been declared as a National Park and offers guided tours to the top.

You can also hike up Stromboli, an active volcano located north of Sicily. There’s much more to hiking Stromboli, as you will have to arrive by boat before you are given a compulsory tour to the peak and there are only 2 tours given per day; one at 5 PM and one at midnight. Although it is a strenuous hike, it is definitely worth it.
