How to Celebrate a Holiday Away From Home

Living abroad can be one of the most rewarding experiences that one can have, but the reality is, it can get quite tough being away from your loved ones when you’re in a new place for extended periods of time. It becomes even more apparent when you’re celebrating the holidays without  them around. You’ll miss them, but don’t let it stop you from making the most out of the happiest time of the year.
Here are a few tips to help you celebrate and get the most out of enjoying the holidays.

TIP #1: Keep an open mind
Wherever you may be, the traditions and customs may differ from what you are used to. Observe and try to take part because you may learn something new. The best way to celebrate and have a good time is to avoid coming in with set expectations. Come in with an open heart and mind, rather than an expectation for others to conform. This is the best way to ring in the holidays.

TIP #2: Make new friends
A basic emotional need for every individual, is the desire to feel like they belong. Find a community, an organization or a club where you can bond with others over similar interests. Whether it’s a photography club, or a dance class, chances are that your activity group will welcome the holidays in some way. Bonding with others over similar interests will also foster a closer relationship that can lead to a friendship.
Invite your new friends out to celebrate the holidays with you too! Whether that means just chatting with someone over a hot beverage or throwing a small dinner party, don’t be afraid of making the first move!

TIP #3: Stay updated with your loved ones
Technology has made getting in touch with someone across the globe faster and easier than it has ever been before. Talk to your friends and family to set up a video call so that you can observe the holiday celebrations at home. You may not be talking to everyone the entire time, but seeing everyone together and celebrating can give you a sense of familiarity, involvement, and make you feel like you’re right there with them.

TIP #4: The joy of giving
They say that happiness comes from giving, so turn yours into one filled with giving and helping others. There are many families and individuals that are unable to celebrate the holidays for many reasons. Why not get involved during the holidays with a charitable organization, and help make others happy? Look up a charitable organization near you, and reach out to ask how you can get involved. This puts you in a social environment with other passionate and helpful individuals, and gives you a sense of purpose as you are helping to make a difference in the lives of others.
Following these tips will allow you to really experience the unique ways different countries celebrate the holidays. And as an added bonus, you may pick up a few new traditions to share with friends and family once you are finally home!
