Find an Approved Reason to Travel

Thanks to new regulations that went into effect in January 2016, American citizens can now freely travel to Cuba for “temporary sojourn.” This is a broad category that encompasses travel for reasons such as humanitarian projects, professional meetings, family visits to close relatives and even journalist activities.
The bad news? Tourism is not yet a legitimate reason that Americans can use to travel to Cuba. So if you’re eager to organize a trip, you need to figure out which category suits you.
Some options, such as “any type of support for the Cuban people,” are pretty open to interpretation, so you might be able to arrange a trip through an agency or organization that offers the chance for charity work or “social travel.”
